Effective Treatments for Alopecia Barbae

Alopecia Barbae is a type of Alopecia Areata characterised by round or oval patches in the beard area. This indicates that only men are affected with Alopecia Barbae. The hair loss phenomenon is still unknown and so is the treatment. However, there are certain procedures recommended by the experts that accelerate the growth of hair in the affected zone.

1. Cortisone:
Cortisone is one of the popular treatments for Alopecia Barbae which is applied by the dermatologists. They are injections which are inserted into the bald area repeatedly. If the treatment is found successful then, the patient can see hair growth in about a month. However, this treatment does not guarantee any sure results. This treatment is very painful but has no side effects.

2. Topical Minoxidil:
Another treatment which has been found effective in treating Alopecia Barbae, is Topical Minoxidil. It's an ointment which is applied 5% in concentration to the affected areas. Some other solutions which are 2% in concentration have not been that effective in the treatment and should be avoided. According to many experts, the combination of Topical Minoxidil and Cortisone increases the chances of hair re-growth.

3. Anthralin:
Anthralin which is also recommended for psoriasis can be used to alopecia barbae treatment. This is also an ointment resembling tar and is applied to the affected area where one needs hair growth. The cream needs to be kept for 30 mins to an hour. This cream starts showing results after 12 or 14 weeks since the start of the treatment. However, keeping the cream in excess of the recommended time and contact with eyes should be strictly avoided.
