Some men consider moustache and beard as signs of manliness and dominance. Sadly, some men suffer from a condition in which sudden loss of hair takes place in the beard area. The condition is popularly known as "Alopecia Barbae" and several treatments are available to cure this condition.

There are numerous factors which can cause Alopecia Barbae, but scientists are still unable to identify the root cause of the problem. Theories suggest that genetics and hormonal imbalance may be the reasons responsible for beard patches. It has been observed that people with family members having this condition have higher chances of acquiring the condition. Lack or rush of a specific hormone may also cause imbalance in the body which may lead to hair loss.

According to research, a specific androgen, named Dihydrotestosterone or DHT plays a major role in all types of Alopecia, especially “Androgenetic Alopecia”. Another possibility is lack of blood flow near the affected area which prevents hair from growing in the area. Blood carries essential nutrients that are important for the growth of hair.

Alopecia Barbae causes insecurity and anxiety among the patients which affects their social life. There are some good natural treatments for Alopecia Barbae available today. One such natural remedy is the “Calosal” beard ointment which is found to have brought visible results among users of the remedy. Products containing Minodixil may also help treat Alopecia Barbae.

It helps enlarge old and constricted blood vessels leading to improved blood flow. These products are usually cost-effective and are easily available in your local drugstores. Alopecia Barbae is an ailment which can attack anyone. A simple gesture of acceptance will significantly help an individual with this condition.

Effective Remedies For Alopecia Barbae

The Dermatology Academy in the USA observes “Alopecia Barbae” as a sub type of “Alopecia Areata”. The symptoms of the disease include bald patches appearing on the scalp. Alopecia Barbae is a similar kind of medical condition slightly differing from Alopecia Areata in terms of the affected area, which usually affects the beard. Both the conditions are found only in men.

Treatments

Till now, the autoimmune nature with which the body responds to certain things is the only known fact about the hair loss phenomenon. The reasons are mysterious and so is the perfect treatment for Alopecia Barbae. However, experts suggest some medications which help in growing the hair follicles faster than the normal recovery process.

1. Cortisone - Cortisones are available in the form of injections and is considered the most common treatment for this disease. Application - The injections should be applied only under the supervision of a dermatologist or by the dermatologists themselves. It is injected in the affected area repeatedly. Results - On successful treatment, the hair starts re-growing in about four weeks time. There is however no guarantee on this treatment. Side Effects - The treatment procedure is quite painless with no side effects. The affected area may sink or cause a tingling feeling which recovers by itself with time.

2. Topical Minoxidil - Topical Minoxidil is available in solution form and is considered effective too. Application - Only 5% of the concentrated solution needs to be applied on the affected area for effectiveness. Some other solutions which are 2% in concentration have not been that successful in the treatment and should be avoided. Results - The combination of Topical Minoxidil and Cortisone increases and improves the chances of hair re-growth.

3. Anthralin - Anthralin is an expert recommended treatment for Alopecia Barbae. It is also a treatment for psoriasis. It is available in the form of an ointment or cream.

Application - Apply the cream on the affected area where hair growth is needed. Wash off the cream after 30 mins to an hour, as recommended. Results - The treatment has shown results over a period of 12 to 14 weeks since the beginning of the treatment. Side Effects - An extreme care should be taken while applying the cream. The cream should not be left on the affected area after the recommended time and should always be kept away from the eyes.
